Surfing in Corpus Christi, Texas
Yes, there are waves in Corpus Christi. The Gulf beaches of North Padre Island and Mustang Island get surf all year, and the Coastal Bend has a friendly, tight-knit surf crew. This guide covers where to surf in Corpus Christi, when the waves are best, what to wear and how to stay safe, from the people who watch Packery Channel every day on the live surf cam.
Where to Surf in Corpus Christi
Packery Channel (North Padre Island)
The most popular surf spot in Corpus Christi. The rock jetties at Packery Channel help hold sandbars that shape the waves, and the beach on the north side (J.P. Luby, off Zahn Road) is where most surfers paddle out. The south side is usually a bit smaller and calmer, which suits beginners. Packery Surf Cam looks right at this break, so you can see the surf at Packery Channel live before you go.
Bob Hall Pier (Padre Balli Park)
A few miles south on North Padre Island, the waters around Bob Hall Pier are a classic Corpus Christi surf spot with plenty of room to spread out. The pier reopened in February 2026 after being rebuilt following Hurricane Hanna. Give the pilings and anglers plenty of space.
Mustang Island and Fish Pass
North of Packery, Mustang Island has miles of open beach and sandbars. The Fish Pass jetty area near Mustang Island State Park can pick up a little more swell on the right days, and it is usually less crowded.
Port Aransas
The Horace Caldwell Pier and the jetty at the north end of Mustang Island make Port Aransas the other hub of Coastal Bend surfing. It is a short drive up the island from Corpus Christi, so a lot of locals check both Packery and Port A on the same morning.
When Are the Waves Best?
Fall through spring is the most consistent time for Texas surfing. Cold fronts push wind swell into the Coastal Bend, and the north and northwest winds behind them blow offshore and clean the waves up, often the best surf of the week. Late summer and early fall (August to October) can bring the biggest swells of the year when a tropical storm or hurricane is in the Gulf. Midsummer is often small, so it is longboard and foamie season.
When you read a Texas surf forecast, look at the swell period as well as the height. Most Gulf swell is short-period wind swell (around 4 to 6 seconds); anything 7 seconds or more usually means cleaner, more powerful waves. Light winds from the west or northwest are offshore at Packery Channel, while the common southeast sea breeze makes it choppy by the afternoon, so mornings are usually best.
Water Temperature & Wetsuits
- May to October: warm Gulf water, upper 70s to mid 80s °F. Boardshorts or a rash guard.
- April and November: low to mid 70s °F. A springsuit or shorty, or trunks on warm days.
- December to March: water can drop into the low 60s °F. A 3/2 mm full wetsuit.
Uncle Greg’s daily surf report includes the water temperature at Packery Channel every morning.
Staying Safe in the Surf
- Rip currents form along the jetties and between sandbars. If you are pulled out, paddle parallel to the beach, then back in. The daily report includes the rip current risk.
- Jetties are slippery and covered in barnacles. Keep your distance on bigger days and give anglers on the rocks room.
- Beach driving: watch for cars on the sand, and get a beach parking permit if you park on the beach at Packery, J.P. Luby or Padre Balli Park.
- Jellyfish and Portuguese man-o’-war show up some weeks, especially in summer. Check the beach before you paddle out.
